Antonio Conte has parted company with Tottenham Hotspur on mutual consent after 16 months in charge of the London based side.
The statement released on Sunday by the club chairman Daniel Levy indicated that the club came to a mutual agreement with the Italian to relieve him of his duties.
“We can announce that the head coach Antonio Conte has left the Club by mutual agreement.
“We achieved Champions League qualification in Antonio’s first season at the Club. We thank Antonio for his contribution and wish him well for the future.
“We have 10 Premier League games remaining and we have a fight on our hands for a Champions League place. We all need to pull together. Everyone has to step up to ensure the highest possible finish for our Club and amazing, Loyal supporters.” Read the club statement.
Considering Conte’s rant last week following Tottenham’s 3-3 draw with Southampton, It was evident that his days at the club were numbered. Conte labelled his players ‘selfish’ and also pinned the blame on the club insisting that it’s not built for the purpose of winning titles.
The former Chelsea manager was visibly disappointed with his players who threw away a two goal advantage to draw with the bottom team in the league.
Conte leaves the club in fourth position in the Premier League with only two points off fifth placed Newcastle though the Magpies have two games in hand on the London based side.
Assistant coach Christian Stellini will take charge of the club until the end of the season. Stellini previously deputized Conte on the touch line when the Italian was recovering from gallbladder surgery.
Though Conte was signed with an expectation to end the club’s long wait for silverware, he has not achieved that goal.
The Italian manager has come short of his previous managerial expertise that saw him win league titles at Juventus, Chelsea and Inter milan. His contact was due to expire at the end of this season.
