Aston Villa’s impressive winning run at home in the Premier League extended to 14 games after securing a well-deserved 1-0 victory against Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola.
Facing the treble-winning Manchester City, Aston Villa started aggressively, eager to extend their phenomenal PL home run. City seemed unsettled early on, with Ederson making two crucial stops to deny Leon Bailey and Pau Torres, preventing Villa from taking an early lead.
A momentary lull followed the frantic start, providing relief to City, who, missing key players like Rodri, appeared disjointed.
Despite Douglas Luiz briefly finding the net, the goal was disallowed as the ball had gone out of play before he converted Lucas Digne’s cross.
With only one point and one place separating the two teams before the match, there was little difference on the pitch.
Villa continued to push forward, with John McGinn coming close on the hour mark, narrowly missing the target with a right-footed effort.
For Villa’s manager Emery, this match held more significance, as he had never beaten Guardiola in 13 previous encounters.
The breakthrough came in the second half when Bailey’s strike deflected off Rúben Dias, beating Ederson who was rooted to the spot.
Rather than defending their lead, Villa maintained their attacking momentum. They almost doubled their advantage immediately as McGinn forced yet another save from Ederson.
In the closing minutes, former City player Luiz struck the post, coming agonizingly close to securing a more substantial lead.
Despite the narrow margin, Villa held on to break a 13-match winless streak against City in the PL head-to-head encounters.
With this victory, Villa leapfrog Manchester City to move to third place on the 32 points. For Guardiola’s side, they are now winless in their last four games and are now five points below leaders Arsenal.
Next-up, City will battle Luton Town while Villa will take on Arsenal.
