Over the past few weeks, there have been increasing reports circulating around Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Lionel Messi’s future.
The 35-year-old Argentina captain’s contract with PSG expires at the end of this season and talks about an extension are taking baby steps with Messi wanting to first be assured of the club’s sporting plans for next season.
With that in mind, Barcelona have stepped up efforts for Messi’s second coming at Camp Nou, and Soccer Scoop has learnt that the Catalan giants are currently in talks with La Liga authorities to work around the club’s financial situation and see how it can facilitate Messi’s return.
Barcelona let Messi go at the end of the 2020/221 season due to his big financial burden and have continued to be limited in player recruitment since then, coupled with being forced to move players so they can have a wage bill that fits into the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.
Now that their situation is slightly improving and Messi’s contract talks with PSG are almost stalled, Barcelona fancy securing his signature for at least one more season.
A few weeks ago, Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal reportedly offered the World Cup winner a contract worth a whopping £400 million per year in an effort to sway his mind and move to the league that also currently employs his long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
As much as this offer is enticing, Messi is currently more interested in staying in Europe, and that’s when staying at PSG or moving back to Barcelona comes in.
According to Sky Sports, Barcelona vice-president Rafael Yuste revealed that the club have been in contact with Lionel Messi for a while now to try and persuade him to return to the club where he won so much and made his name. Messi made 778 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions and won 10 La Liga trophies in 17 seasons.
