La Liga champions Barcelona have announced that defender Inigo Martinez has completed his move to Camp Nou after leaving Athletic Club.
Inigo joins the Catalans on a free transfer and becomes the club’s third new addition this summer after the arrival of both IIkay Gundogan and Mikayil Faye.
“An agreement has been reached between FC Barcelona and Íñigo Martínez for the player to join the Club after his contract with Athletic Club ended,” A Statement released by Barcelona read in parts.
“The player is set to sign a two-year deal that ends on June 30, 2025, with the release clause set at 400 million euro.
“The Club will provide further details about Íñigo Martínez’ presentation as a new first team player in due course.”
The 32-year old joins Barcelona after five years at Bilbao where he featured in 177 games in all competitions and scored eight times as a center-back.
He won the Spanish Super Cup and was twice a runner-up in the Copa del Rey with Bilbao.
Before joining Athletic Club in 2018, Martinez started his career and played at Real Sociedad.
At Barcelona, he will add experience and depth to Xavi’s backline as he is already capped 20 times with the Spanish national team.
He will compete with Andreas Christensen, Jules Kunde, Ronald Araujo, Marcos Alonso and Eric Gracia for a starting spot at the center of Barcelona’s defense.
