According to Fabrizio Romano, Bayern Munich are not interested in triggering Joao Cancelo’s €70m buyout clause, but are open to negotiations.
The Portuguese made a sudden loan move to Bayern from Manchester City in the January transfer window following a misunderstanding with the club manager Pep Guardiola that prevented the two from seeing eye to eye.
Cancelo was perhaps hoping to stay at the Allianz Arena permanently, but that may not happen as Bayern are not willing to trigger the buyout clause. They however, are ready to negotiate with Man City if the English club is interested.
The current Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel is a huge fan of the 28-year-old and this could work in the defender’s favour as Bayern are set to hold discussions with Tuchel regarding the player in May.
“I love João Cancelo. He has the absolute highest quality, left foot, right foot, passing. I’m more than happy that he’s here. We will need him. I’m convinced that he can play at a top level for us.” Tuchel is quoted by Romano saying.
As mentioned earlier, the Bavarians are willing to negotiate a deal with Man City that doesn’t require buying out the clause. Hassan Salihamidzic, Bayern’s director in February told Bild that the fee in the clause is too high for his side to afford.
“We’re playing with open cards . This sum is difficult for us to imagine in the next few years. If all sides really want a common solution, you can manage that in the end. He knows that he has been one of our dream players for years.”
Cancelo has scored one goal and made four assists in his first 10 games for Bayern across all competitions. He had however, failed to cement a regular starting place under Julian Naglesmann, but on Tuchel’s first game in charge, he was named on the bench as Bayern thrashed Dortmund 4-2 in Der Klassiker.
