Bayern Munich have relieved Julian Nagelsmann of his managerial duties, and have as a result, appointed former Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel as his replacement.
The former Leipzig manager received the sack after the club hierarchy deemed his plans, player-wise, non-developmental. He leaves the Bavarians who have won the Bundesliga title ten successive times, second, one point behind table leaders Dortmund.
His successor Tuchel who has previously managed Mainz, Dortmund, PSG and recently Chelsea has signed a contract that will see him at the club untill the end of the 2024/25 season.
The Champions League winner with Chelsea will take charge of his first training session on Monday as Bayern prepare to face Dortmund immediately after the international break in the Der Klassiker.
Tuchel has been out of work since his sack from the London side in September, but he now has an immediate task of returning Bayern to the top.
After letting Nagelsmann go, Oliver Kahn, Bayern’s CEO said;
“When we signed Julian Nagelsmann for FC Bayern in the summer of 2021, we were convinced we would work with him on a long-term basis – and that was the goal of all of us right up to the end.
“Julian shares our aspiration to play successful and attractive football. But now we have come to the conclusion that the quality in our squad – despite the Bundesliga title last year – has come to the fore less and less often.” This all as quoted by the club website.
Aside from dethroning Dortmund from the top, Tuchel also faces another uphill task of progressing to the semifinals of the Champions League as he faces a hungry Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City team in the Champions League quarter-finals next month.
