Borussia Dortmund proved a no match for their bitter rivals Bayern Munich as they miserably lost 4-2 to the Bavarians on Saturday in their first game after the international break.
Dortmund had gone into the game as the league leaders following their 6-1 victory over Koln, and Bayern’s 2-1 defeat to Leverkusen before the international break, but on Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge as Bayern manager, the Die Schwarzgelben were unable to contain the defending champions.
Inside the 13th minute, Gregory Kobel opened the way for their hosts with an own goal, and it set the pace for Bayern who have won the league ten consecutive times.
Veteran Germany striker Thomas Muller nicknamed ‘Mr. Bayern’ stretched the lead to 3-0 in the space of six minutes with his brace to ensure the Bavarians ended the the first opening 45 minutes on a comfort zone.
Kingsley Coman from a Leroy Sane pass then made it four for Tuchel’s army six minutes into the the second half, and the goal sealed the three points for the hosts. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting thought he had netted the fifth, but his acrobatic finish was ruled out for offside in the 59th minute.
Dortmund thought they had ignited a comeback when Emre Can converted a penalty with 18 minutes left on the clock, but it was a little too late for both the former Liverpool midfielder and his team. Donyell Malen got Dortmund’s second, but like Can’s, the goal passed for a consolation.
The game was Bayern’s first since partying company with Julian Naglesmann about a week ago, and it was a result that dislodged Edin Terzic’s side from the top while sending the Bavarians back on top.
It is a result motivating enough for Tuchel whose side face Manchester City in the quarterfinals of the Champions League ten days from now.
It is also a result, that puts Bayern two points clear at the top of the table.
