Bournemouth secured a historic first-ever away victory against Manchester United, delivering a stellar performance that culminated in a resounding 3-0 win at Old Trafford — marking their fourth victory in the last five Premier League (PL) matches.
Despite a track record of struggling in previous away encounters with nine losses out of the last 10 (with one draw), Bournemouth wasted no time asserting themselves. Within the opening five minutes, they took the lead as Lewis Cook’s high press won possession in the opposition half. Cook then delivered a precise low cross into the box, finding Dominic Solanke who coolly slotted the ball into the far corner.
In response, Erik ten Hag’s side, led by the impressive Harry Maguire, November’s PL Player of the Month, tested Bournemouth’s resolve. Maguire’s looping header forced a full-stretch, fingertip save from Neto.
Undeterred by United’s response, Bournemouth found the back of the net for a second time through Marcus Tavernier, who poked home the rebound after André Onana denied Solanke. However, the goal was disallowed for offside.
As the first half progressed, United aimed to narrow the deficit, with Ilya Zabarnyi’s header cleared off the line by Diogo Dalot, and Solanke hitting the post with Onana beaten.
Ten Hag’s halftime talk ignited a renewed vigor in his players, evident as they launched a relentless assault on Bournemouth’s defense early in the second half. The visitors, however, stood firm, showcasing resilient defending. Milos Kerkez epitomized this resilience, putting his body on the line to block Scott McTominay’s effort and subsequently Bruno Fernandes’ rebound.
Both managers sought to inject fresh energy, making key substitutions, with Danish internationals Rasmus Højlund and Phillip Billing introduced just before the hour mark. Billing, in particular, justified his inclusion by powering a header home at the far post, doubling Bournemouth’s advantage.
Five minutes later, the Cherries further extended their lead as United’s defense crumbled. Marcos Senesi, left unmarked in the hosts’ penalty area, nodded home an excellent Tavernier’s corner.
This five-minute double struck Old Trafford with disbelief, extinguishing any hopes of a Red Devils comeback. Ten Hag’s team suffered their seventh defeat in 16 PL matches, far from an ideal preparation for their upcoming clash against German giants Bayern Munich.
Conversely, jubilation reigned for Bournemouth, ascending to 13th place as their unbeaten streak stretched to five matches on this historic day for the football club.
