Ghanaian international footballer Christian Atsu has been confirmed dead by bis agent Nana Sechere following the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 6, 2023. Atsu has been missing since then but his lifeless body has now been found under the rubble of the building where he lived in Turkey after days of searching.
At the time of his death, Atsu, 31, was playing for Turkish side Hatayspor, but he also played for Premier League clubs Newcastle United and Chelsea with loan spells at Everton and Bournemouth.
The news of Atsu’s death has been announced by his agent Sachere on Twitter, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well-wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning.
“My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support. I ask that whilst we make the necessary arrangements, that everyone would please respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time,” Sachere’s tweet reads.
Atsu made 121 Premier League appearances for Newcastle, Chelsea, Everton, and Bournemouth during his eight-year spell in England. He moved to Turkey in September last year after completing a move to Hatayspor. Atsu also played 65 times for Ghana in all competitions including the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He scored nine goals for his country.
Christian Atsu is survived by his wife Marie-Claire Rupio Atsu and their three children. Rest in peace.
