Manchester United legend and former captain Roy Keane has expressed his dismay at Bruno Fernandes leading the Red Devils as captain.
Fernandes’ captaincy has many a time come under scrutiny, with experts such as Keane and Gary Neville, another United legend criticising his body language and treatment of team-mates, but Keane’s latest remarks come after United’s dismal display against rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford.
Fernandes and his teammates were subjected to a 3-0 thumping by City who outplayed Erik Ten Hag’s boys in all sense of the word.
Erling Haaland scored a brace and Phil Foden the other as United registered their fifth loss of the season which left Keane frustrated and calling out Ten Hag to strip Fernandes of the captaincy armband.
“The first thing I would do, I have to tell you having watched him again, I would definitely take the captaincy off him, 100 per cent,” Keane told Sky Sports.
“I know it’s a big decision and obviously they changed the captain with Maguire. Fernandes is not captain material. I think he’s a talented player, no doubt about it. But what I saw with him today, I know we’ve discussed his before. His whinging, his moaning, his throwing his arms up in the air constantly. It really isn’t acceptable.
“I would take it off him. Where do you make changes? I would start with that because the manager can do that. He’s the opposite of what I’d want in a captain.”
Fernandes took over the captaincy role in July after Ten Hag stripping Harry Maguire of the armband. Man United under the Portuguese reign have struggled for form both domestically and on the continental stage.
They currently find themselves placed eighth with 15 poinst, that’s eight off Liverpool who occupy the tenth position.
