Union Berlin defeated Mainz 2-1 on Saturday to go top of the Bundesliga table.
Theoson Siebatcheuiji’s strike six minutes to fulltime was the reason for that. Union Berlin showed their intentions clear, dominating the first half proceedings and they were rewarded with a Kevin Behrens’ strike in the 32nd minute.
Mainz came back strongly in the second half, and in the 78th minute, found the leveller through former Berlin striker Marcus Ingvartsen’s penalty.
But just when they thought they had done enough to earn a point, Siebatcheuiji came off the bench to fire past Finn Gilbert Dahmen.
In the other games played, Borussia Dortmund convincingly hammered 10 man Freiburg 5-1 to move within two points of the Bundesliga leaders with Nico Schlotterbeck, Karim Adyemi, Sebastian Haller, Julian Brandt, and Giovanni Reyna notching the goals.
Relegation threatened Bochum ran riot over TSG Hoffeheim with a 5-2 victory at Vonovia Ruhrstafion to move out of the dreaded zone and it was goals from Phillip Hofmann, Philipp Forster, Takuma Asano, Erhan Masonic and Moritz Broschinski that ensured that.
Eintracht Frankfurt were 3-0 winners over Hertha Berlin with Kolo Muani coming in with a brace and Aurelio Buta scoring the other to ensure that the home side moved to fifth place on the log.
The other games saw Koln playing to a barren draw with visiting RB Leipzig. Bottom placed Shalke O4 and Borussia Monchengladbach also played to a goalless draw .
Action resumes today with Stuttgart hosting Werder Bremen While Wolfsburg entertain Bayern Munich who will go back on top with a win.
