It will be the battle of the last year’s Carabao Cup finalists when Manchester United host Newcastle in the fourth round on Wednesday at Old Trafford.

In the previous round, Erik Ten Hag’s side put three goals past Crystal Palace, while the Magpies eliminated last year’s treble winners Manchester City.

Coming into this game, both sides never secured desired results in the Premier League. United lost the Manchester Derby to City by a 3-0 score line, while Newcastle disappointingly drew 2-all against Wolves.

Man United beat Newcastle 2-0 to win this title last year. Newcastle already got their revenge when they beat United a few weeks ago with the similar 2-0 score line, but they will be gunning for more.

Manchester United enter Wednesday’s game having progressed from each of their last five fourth-round ties in the EFL Cup, while the Magpies have not been beaten in an EFL Cup fourth-round tie since the 2004-05 campaign.

Team News

Luke Shaw (muscle), Amad Diallo (knee), Tyrell Malacia (knee) and Lisandro Martinez (foot) will be absent for the Red Devils on Wednesday. Jadon Sancho is also out as he has now spent two months ostracised from the main group of players.

But Casemiro and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are expected to be back in contention after having missed the last couple of games.

For Newcastle, they will be without Harvey Barnes (ankle), Elliot Anderson (back), Jacob Murphy (shoulder), Lewis Miley (illness) and third-round matchwinner Alexander Isak (groin), who are all sidelined.

Match Stats

The last three meetings between these teams have seen at least one keep a clean sheet.

Newcastle beat Man Utd 2-0 in their last meeting in April. Callum Wilson found the net in that match, just as he did against Crystal Palace at the weekend.

Newcastle are unbeaten in seven domestic matches while Man Utd have lost four of their last seven home games.

Probable Line-ups

Manchester United: Onana; Dalot, Varane, Maguire, Reguilon; Amrabat, Eriksen; Antony, Mount, Garnacho; Hojlund

Newcastle: Pope; Livramento, Schar, Lascelles, Targett; Willock, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Almiron, Wilson, Gordon
