It was another miserable night for Manchester United at Old Trafford as they got dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle United in humiliating fashion on Wednesday.
Following their humiliating 3-0 league defeat to rivals Man City over the weekend, there was hope that he Red Devils would bounce back against the side they beat in the finals to win this competition last season.
But that did not happen as they lost 3-0 to the Magpies courtesy of strikes from Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock.
Erik Ten Hag’s men were totally dominated at their own backyard particularly in the first half. The visitors were better organised and more committed than a pressure-mounted United.
It took Newcastle 29 minutes to break the deadlock after a Tino Livramento’s terrific run to set up Almiron, who then used his pace to beat off his marker and place the ball past Andre Onana.
The second came seven minutes later thanks to Hall’s beautifully controlled volley for his first in Newcastle colors.
United came out for the second half a better side, but struggled to create and break down Eddie Howe’s side.
And it was the Magpies who got their third after Amrabat lost possession in the middle to Joelinton. The Brazilian passed the ball to Willock, and the Englishman finished low to cement the result for Newcastle with almost half an hour still to play.
Little happened after that goal as Newcastle comfortably sat back while United huffed and puffed.
The outcome means Newcastle have avenged last season’s defeat in the final and they march on to the quarterfinals.
For United they get ejected from the Carabao Cup and have now lost eight of their 15 games this season.
United will return to action on Saturday when they face Fulham away from home, while Newcastle will battle unbeaten Arsenal on the same day.
