Chelsea have confirmed that Carney Chukwuemeka has undergone surgery on a knee injury picked up against West Ham United on Sunday.
The 19-year-old attacking midfielder sustained the injury during the first half of the 3-1 defeat at London Stadium and was promptly substituted off at halftime.
Through a statement published on the club website, the club have said that Chukwuemeka will not begin his rehabilitation with the medical department.
“Carney Chukwuemeka sustained an injury to his left knee during our game against West Ham United on Sunday.
“Last night, Carney underwent surgery and will now begin his recovery. The 19-year-old will work with the club’s medical department on his rehabilitation at Cobham,” Chelsea’s statement reads.
It remains to be seen how long the 19-year-old will be sidelined, though early estimates say it could be as much as six weeks.
Chukwuemeka started both of Chelsea’s two Premier League games so far and scored their only goal against West Ham last weekend.
Chukwuemeka is the latest player to go under the care of Chelsea’s medical department which already admitted club captain Reece James, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and summer signing Christopher Nkunku.
