Manchester City’s Rodrigo Hernandez has revealed that the memories of City’s Champions League semifinal exit at the hands of Real Madrid last season still haunt him up to date.
Pep Guardiola’s men beat Real Madrid 4-3 in the first leg of their semifinal tie at the Etihad Stadium to take a slender advantage to Santiago Bernabeu for the second leg hoping to finish off the job.
At the Bernabeu, the Citizens went into the lead, and gave the hosts an uphill task of overturning a two goal deficit, but the record champions like they had done in the previous stages staged a comeback to end the game 3-1 on the night and 6-5 on aggregate as they ejected the Blues.
“Its not a match I like to remember! Generally, I watch all my matches on replay. That game at the Bernabeu is the only one I haven’t re-watched because of the bad memories it brings back. Its true that it was a very open tie, and we had it in our hands. It got away from us in the end,” Rodrigo told El Larguero.
Asked if he would like to meet Real Madrid this season, Rodrigo said; “This year we are in a very demanding draw and we don’t think about what might happen in the semi finals. We are a club that wants to win the Champions League and I think we have the team to demand to win it.”
Manchester City are still on the hunt for the one trophy that has eluded them. They booked their place in the quarterfinals after eliminating Leipzig 8-1 on aggregate. Bayern Munich awaits in the quarters and they will hope to go a step closer to achieving their dream when the two sides face off in both legs next month.
