Champions League holders Manchester City got the better of RB Leipzig after a late surge that saw them win 3-1 on Wednesday.
The Citizens had to dig deep into the last six minutes of the match to restore their lead and ultimately win the game after playing most of the match level at 1-1.
Man City enjoyed most of the ball, and stamped their authority on the game with a 14th minute chance that neither Bernardo Silva nor Phil Foden could convert.
But it didn’t take long for City to find the opener as it came in the 25th minute after Rico Lewis and Silva exchanged passes before the former cut the ball back for Foden to steer it into the corner.
In the 31st minute, last season’s Champions League top scorer Erling Haaland, who had been quiet got a chance to double the lead but failed to work a tight angle and saw his shot go just wide. Nevertheless, the match went into the halftime break with Pep Guardiola’s team leading.
In the second half, RB showed more desire to get something out of the match. They got the leveller three minutes after the restart when they regained possession deep inside their own half and Yussuf Poulsen produced a neat throughball to release Lois Openda.
The Belgian showed great strength and kept composure to hold off Manuel Akanji, before slotting past Ederson.
The match remained on level terms until the 84th minute when second half substitutes Jeremy Doku and Julian Alvarez combined to rescue City.
Doku teased Mohamed Simakan and laid the ball back to Alvarez on the edge of the box who brilliantly curled the ball into the top corner.
Leipzig went all out in search for an equaliser but instead got punished. The visitors Mounted a devastating counterattack with Haaland laying the ball for Alvarez, who accelerated into space to turn from scorer to provider for Doku. Doku calmly slid the ball home to make it 3-1 in the 92nd minute.
The result means Manchester City return to winning ways after losing two matches consecutively, and it’ll act as a morale booster for them ahead of the tie against Arsenal on Sunday.
