Wednesday night at St. James Park will forever be reminded after Newcastle thumped French giants Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 in their first home Champions League game in 20 years.
Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar were all on target as Newcastle produced arguably their best performance under Eddie Howe.
Almiron broke the deadlock as early as the 17th minute when he swept in a rebound to punish slack play at the back by the visitors after Gianluigi Donnarumma had parried Alexander Isak’s thumping strike.
Burn doubled Newcastle’s lead few minutes to the break when he nodded in Bruno Guimaraes’ cross from the left.
Five minutes into the second half, it got even better for Newcastle as Longstaff made a brilliant run into the box to send in a low shot underneath Donnarumma and consequently triple his side’s lead.
PSG got a glimpse of hope when Lucas Hernandez nodded in from close range before the hour-mark, but the Magpies remained composed and late on, sealed their victory in stoppage time when Schar stunningly shot into the top corner from outside the box.
Overall, Newcastle were brilliant both offensively and defensively as they restricted PSG to just two shots on target. Aside from Hernandez’s goal, the other attempt on target for PSG fell on Ousmane Dembélé, who had his shot saved by Nick Pope.
This result sees Newcastle who drew 0-0 against AC Milan in their opening group game go top of Group F with four points from their two outings. PSG on three points drop to the second position.
Newcastle will play Germany side Borussia Dortmund in their next two games while PSG will battle Italian giants AC Milan.
AC Milan are third in the group with two points while Dortmund are at the bottom with a solitary point.
