Brazilian youngster Rodrygo Silva de Goes scored twice for Madrid as they defeated Chelsea 2-0 at the Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening to qualify for the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League.
Both Rodrygo goals came in the second half to help the Los Blancos record a similar result as in the first leg six days ago.
The Brazilian’s first came in the 58th minute before sealing off the victory in the 80th minute following brilliant work by Federico Valverde.
Chelsea, who came into this game trailing the two-legged tie by 2-0 goals produced one of their best performances of the season in the opening half but failed to convert their chances.
Kante failed to find the target earlier on in the game when he was found unmarked in the box while Marc Cucurella failed to get his shot past Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois just before the break.
Despite not playing well, Madrid also had chances in the opening half. Rodrygo thumped the outside of the post from a tight angle while Luka Modric had his shot saved by Chelsea custodian Kepa Arrizabalanga.
After the restart, Chelsea almost pulled a goal back in the tie but Eder Militao made an incredible block to deny Kante, who got in the six-yard box after Gallagher intelligently nodded the ball back across the box.
Before the hour mark though, across the run of play, Rodrygo helped Madrid to break the deadlock after skipping past Trevoh Chalobah to square the ball to Vincius Junior. His Brazilian counterpart calmly rolled it back to him to find the back of the net.
Madrid and Rodrygo’s second came in the 80th minutes after the youngster netted into an empty net after brilliant work by Valverde. The Madrid midfielder received the ball from Vincius to dribble past two Chelsea defenders and square the ball to Rodrygo who calmly slotted home from close range with Kepa well beaten by Valverde’s pass.
Before Madrid’s second though, Enzo Fernandes had his powerful effort saved by Courtois
With the 2-0 loss, Frank Lampard’s side lose their quarterfinal 4-0 on aggregate and will now put their focus on finishing off the season well in the English Premier League.
For Madrid, they progress to the semis and will face either Man City or Bayern.
Man City go into the second leg at the Arianz Arena with a 3-0 advantage over the Thomas Tuchel’s team
