Cole Palmer netted a stoppage-time equalizer against his former club Manchester City as the three-time English Premier League defending champions drew 4-4 with Chelsea in a sensational game at Stamford Bridge.
Erling Haaland opened the scoring via a controversial penalty, before goals from Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling – who was outstanding against his old team- drew Chelsea back in front.
At the interval, it was 2-2 after Manuel Akanji, who was left unmarked in the box, equalized in added time following Bernardo Silva’s cross.
Immediately after restart, Haaland bundled in his second at the far post to again give City the lead following a quick break and Chelsea’s bad defending.
The score went back to 3-3 after the hour mark as Nicholas Jackson reacted first to a minor Ederson error to put Chelsea level. The City goalie pilled Conor Gallagher’s ferocious shot back into play for Jackson to rebound in.
Then with just four minutes left to the 90, Rodri looked to have won it for the visitors with a long-range strike that deflected past Robert Sanchez.
Before the end of the game, in the fifth of the eight added on time, more drama occurred. Substitute Armando Broja was brought down in the box by Ruben Diaz for referee Martin Taylor to award the Blues a penalty. Palmer- who started the season as a City player – calmly dispatched in the spot kick to ensure the game ended level.
This draw leaves Manchester City on 28 points, one clear of Arsenal and Liverpool at the Premier League summit after 12 games.For Chelsea, they jump to 10th with 16 points.
In the next games, Manchester City will host Liverpool while Chelsea will take on Newcastle. These two games will happen after the two-weeks international break.
