Chelsea interim boss Frank Lampard has admitted that his players are “low on confidence” ahead of their London derby clash with Arsenal on Tuesday.
Lampard has lost all his five games since he returned to Chelsea on Interim basis after the departure of Graham Potter in May.
They have lost to Wolves, Brighton and Brentford in the Premier League and also lost all their two legs against Real Madrid in Champions League quarter-final.
“They’re low on confidence and low on performance.” Lampard told reporters when asked about the mood in the camp in the last few weeks.
“I’ve been here in periods where confidence is low. In history we managed to get it back through hard work, level of the squad, we changed managers a lot. It’s different now in terms of the modern player and what expectations are. You shouldn’t be talking about team confidence but it’s clearly an issue at the minute.”
Despite spending over £300 million on new players in January, the Blues are still on course for their worst-ever season in the top-flight, with star names such as Joao Felix, Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk all struggling to adapt to life in English football.
They sit 12th on the log with only 39 points and are statistically the fourth-worst team in the league over the last 20 games, having only picked up 18 points, with only Everton (17), Leicester (17) and Southampton (12) posting lower totals.
Furthermore they have scored the fourth least number of goals in the Premier League with only 30 goals in 32 goals , with only Wolves (29), Everton (25) and Southampton (28) posting fewer than the blue’s.
