In a familiar, but disappointing manner, Chelsea suffered a third consecutive Premier League defeat to Brentford as they lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea who dominated the first 45 minutes and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities, but failed to score found themselves paying the price in the second half.
Bryan Mbeumo and Ethan Pinnock, representing Brentford, managed to find the back of the net, effectively ending Chelsea’s aspirations of a comeback.
Noni Madueke came closest to scoring for Chelsea in the first half when his shot struck the frame of the goal.
Marc Cucurella, Nicholas Jackson, and Cole Palmer also had their chances in the opening half, but they couldn’t convert them into goals.
After the halftime break, Brentford emerged as a counterattacking threat. Vitaly Janelt had Brentford’s first real opportunity to score but fired straight at Robert Sanchez from 15 yards out.
Without needing another warning, Chelsea conceded when Pinnock nodded in Mbeumo’s right-wing cross, giving Brentford the lead.
Despite Chelsea’s late efforts to salvage a draw, with Davide Washington and Cole Palmer coming close, but failing to connect well with Reece James’s excellent cross, the match ended with Brentford securing all three points.
In stoppage time, Mbeumo sealed the victory for Brentford by rolling the ball into the empty net after Sanchez had gone up for a corner.
Chelsea’s focus now shifts to the EFL Cup tie at home against Blackburn on Wednesday, followed by a visit to Tottenham Hotspur next Monday. Meanwhile, Brentford will host West Ham next Saturday
