Former Chelsea and Newcastle winger Christian Atsu is still missing 10 days after the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria. The death toll in the two countries has surpassed 40,000.
According to Atsu’s agent Nana Sechere, they were able to locate Atsu’s exact room location and found his two pairs of shoes but he is nowhere to be seen.
Last week, news circulated that the Ghana international had been rescued and taken to hospital but that turned out to be untrue, as his family and friends have failed to find him in any of the hospitals.
In a statement that’s been published to Sky Sports in part, Sechere has appealed to authorities for more resources to help in their search and has urged his club Hatayspor to join in since their influence and involvement could speed things up.
“It has been nine days since the earthquake and we still have not located Christian. I am at the quake site in Hatay with Christian’s family. The scenes are unimaginable and our hearts are broken for all the people affected. During my time here we have been able to locate Christian Atsu’s exact room location, and we have found two pairs of his shoes,” the Sechere’s statement reads in part.
He adds, “It is unfortunate that the club is not on the ground with us, side by side, in the search for Christian. Their position and influence, accompanied by their local knowledge would be extremely helpful. We implore the president of the club and mayor of Hatay, Lutfu Savas, to provide additional resources to speed up the rescue efforts as a priority.”
Atsu’s last match for Hatayspor was against Kasimpasa and he scored his club’s winning goal deep into added time. Atsu played for Chelsea and Newcastle and had loan spells at Everton and Bournemouth in the Premier League.
He has so far made 65 appearances for Ghana and scored nine goals.
