Manchester United started the season slowly, picked up pace in between, and even went as far as winning the EFL Cup! The results in the last couple of weeks however, have left manager Erik Ten Hag wondering if the squad he has is up to the task of challenging titles.
Last evening, a dismal display from Ten Hag’s team had Newcastle United put two past them and consequently were dislodged from the third position in the league, now occupied by their Sunday tormentors.
It was a result that put the Red Devils’ league title hopes to bed, and they could even vacate the top four if Tottenham wins or draws against Everton tonight.
These lacklustre displays have forced manager Ten Hag to draw up plans to refresh his squad in the summer, and up to six players have been named on the list of those the Dutch manager will be happy to let go once the transfer window opens.
According to Manchester Evening News, the players whose exit from Manchester United is looming include attacker Anthony Martial, goalkeeper Dean Henderson, as well as defenders Brandon Williams, Alex Telles, and club captain Harry Maguire. Yesterday, we reported that Leicester City are keen to welcome back Maguire at the King Power Stadium on loan next season.
The publication has also revealed that Ten Hag is becoming “increasingly impatient with Jadon Sancho.” The 23-year-old England international has struggled for both mental and physical fitness this season and this has limited his game time at Manchester United, as well as limiting Ten Hag’s attacking options.
Man United last scored a Premier League goal more than one month ago in the 3-0 win against Leicester City and their next match is against Brentford on Wednesday. The last time the two met, Brentford scored four and effectively denied Ten Hag’s side even the slightest of opportunity to see the back of the net.
The six players the manager plans to axe from his squad next season have all performed below expectations in the handful of matches they have featured in this season.
