Belgium’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Sweden was suspended at halftime as local police confirmed two people had been shot dead in Brussels on Monday.
A gunman claiming to be a member of the Islamic State, a terrorist group opened fire on a group of Swedish Football fans, who had travelled to Belgium for this game.
According to a video posted by Het Laaste, the gunman who was wearing an orange jacket on a scooter took cover in a nearby building after shooting dead two supporters.
“The match has been suspended at halftime due to security reasons. Further information will follow shortly.” European soccer governing body UEFA said on its website.
“I have just offered my sincere condolences to Ulf Kristersson following tonight’s harrowing attack on Swedish citizens in Brussels,” Belgium Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said in a statement released.
“Our thoughts are with the families and friends who lost their loved ones. As close partners the fight against terrorism is a joint one.”
The Swedish players told UEFA that they did not want to play the second half and the Belgium team agreed, according to Swedish broadcaster TV6.
At halftime, the game was level on scores after Romelu Lukaku scored from the spot to cancel out Viktor Gyökeres opener.
Belgium have already booked their place at the finals in Germany next year, while Sweden cannot qualify.
