England and Ukraine played out a one all draw in matchday five of the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers in the very loud Stadion Miejski Wrocław, Poland.
England came into this match hoping to make it five out of five but Ukraine had other plans. Even though both teams showed their attacking prowess by mounting fast counter attacks, none of them registered a shot on target until the 26th minute when Ukraine pieced passes together in the middle of the park towards England’s goal.
This attack resulted in Yukhum Konoplya making a cute cutback of the ball that fell onto the approaching Oleksandr Zinchenko and the Arsenal man made no mistake but to tap the ball home from close range and give Ukraine the lead.
England woke up after going behind and became more intentional with their attack. In the 42nd minute, captain Harry Kane dropped a little bit deep and managed to play a great pass that fell into the overlapping Kyle Walker who slotted home England’s equalizer.
This is Walker’s first goal for the Three Lions. It took him 77 appearances to get on to the score sheet for the Three Lions. Walker’s goal meant both teams finished the half on level terms which set up an exhilarating second half.
In the second half, England dominated proceedings but failed to get the winning goal. Harry Maguire got a couple of chances in Ukraine’s box but none of his headers made it to the back of the net.
The best chance of the second half was Bukayo Saka’s in the 58th minute. The star boy drove the ball with his left foot and sent a powerful shot goal-wards by Ukraine’s goalkeeper Heorhiy Bushchan put his palm on it and it hit the crossbar before it was cleared.
England are still leading Group C with 13 points and Ukraine are second with seven points in five matches.
