Despite having taken the lead in Belgium, Westham FC were held to 1-all stalemate by KAA Gent in the Europa Conference League.
Danny Ings tapped home in the first half to give the Hammers the lead but Hugo Cuypers equalized for Gent in the second half.
Apart from those two goals, both sides came close to winning the game late on but were unlucky with their attempts.
West ham had a Nayef Aguerd’s goal ruled out for handball while Gift Orban hit the bar for Genk with a wonderful acrobatic attempt.
After the game, David Moyes the West Ham boss told BT Sport: “I’m not really pleased with the result but a draw away from home in Europe you will nearly always take.
“I expected a bit better, nevertheless it gives us a great chance in the second leg. I have to praise Gent as they were very physical.”
With this result, Westham are still on course of making it to back-to-back European semifinals having made it to the last four of the Europa League last season.
They are also still unbeaten in the Conference League with 10 wins in 11 games.
Westham and Genk will meet again next Thursday for the second leg at the London Stadium, England.
Before the Conference game though, the Hammers hosts EPL leaders Arsenal while Genk will travel to Mechelen in the Belgium Pro League.
