Manchester United return to action on Thursday when they host Real Betis at Old Trafford in their first leg of the Europa League round of 16 looking to bounce back from a humiliating 7-0 drubbing at the hands of arch-rivals Liverpool on Sunday.
United were put to the sword by their sworn rivals on Sunday, but now Erik Ten Hag must find a way of getting his players get past that as on form Betis awaits.
This is a fixture that will indeed put United players’ mental strength to test. It will all depend on how the Dutch tactician prepares his side to get over their biggest defeat since 1931.
As the Spaniards come to town, United will hope to continue with their good form at home that has seen them go 21 games unbeaten across all competitions.
The Red Devils got to this stage after eliminating Barcelona 4-3 on aggregates last week. The first leg ended 2-2 at the Spotify Camp Nou, but a 2-1 win at Old Trafford ensured their progression.
Real Betis to qualify for the last 16 impressively topped their group with 16 points. They only dropped two points in the group stages following their one all draw against Roma.
The Verdiblancos have never progressed beyond the last 16 of the Europa League. The last time they tried, they lost to the eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt at this same stage last season.
They go into this game in a pretty decent form. They have won three of their last four games with the only game blemishing that four game run being their game against Real Madrid which ended in a goalless draw over the weekend.
Further more, Manuell Pellegrini’s side make the trip to Old Trafford having lost only two of their last 12 away games in all competitions.
