Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva were on the score sheet as Manchester City registered a 2-0 win over Newcastle to ensure title rivals Arsenal are kept in check.
Foden, a recent returnee from a foot injury has been in fine form. The 22-year-old who notched a brace against Bristol City in the FA Cup in midweek put City ahead in the 15th minute after dancing his way through four Newcastle defenders.
City ended the half with the lead and that lead was doubled in the 67th after substitute Silva who had been on the pitch for only three minutes sent Haaland’s pass into the back of the net.
Like in the first half, Eddie Howie’s team had enticing chances in the second one, but their inability to master the final ball played to their detriment.
After their frustrating one all draw against Nottingham in mid February and a subsequent 1-1 draw against Leipzig in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, Pep Guardiola’s side have now won three games on a bounce including a comfortable 4-1 win over Bournemouth, 3-0 victory against Bristol City and now this one.
The result means City remain within touching distance of league leaders Arsenal. They cut the lead back to two points, but that could change if Arsenal who host Bournemouth at Emirates later today secure all the three points.
Big spending Newcastle meanwhile continue with their decline. The Magpies have not won a single game their 2-1 win over bottom placed Southampton at the end of January.
The side after signing a mammoth of players that included Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon and Nick Pope had been hopeful of earning a European berth, and that seemed to be on track, but following their recent blip in form, the side now find themselves outside the top four in fifth, just two above both Liverpool and Fulham.
