Dietmar ‘Didi’ Hamann has called on the German Football Federation (DFB) to act now and sack national team coach Hansi Flick.
Flick is under fire from German football fans after a poor run of results. Germany have won only once in the last five matches, and that was a 2-0 friendly match against Peru back in March.
The Germans lost 2-0 against Colombia in their last match on Tuesday. These poor performances have prompted Hamann to conclude that Flick has lost the players’ trust.
Flick was appointed as German men’s football team head coach in July 2021 after winning the treble with Bayern Munich and he won eight consecutive matches in the run that saw Germany qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.
However, by Germany’s standards, the World Cup was a failure as they got eliminated in the group stage that had Japan, Spain, and Costa Rica. Since the World Cup, it has been a downward spiral for Flick and his German team and now Hamann wants that to change by sacking the 58-year-old.
“The danger that this will go wrong with him is so great that you have to act now. It’s going in the wrong direction at a huge pace. [He has] lost the trust of the players. If it’s right in the team, then the boys do it themselves, because they say, ‘We’ll go through fire for him’. That’s not the case at the moment.” Hamann told Sky Germany.
Dietmar Hamann played for German from 1997 to 2005 and made 59 appearances.
