Scottish Premier League champions Celtic have reappointed Brendan Rogers as their new manager.
Rodgers replaces Ange Postecoglou who joined Tottenham a few weeks ago and will be deputized by John Kennedy, with Stevie Woods, Gavin Strachan and Harry Kewell as first-team coaches.
The 50-year-old Northern Irishman won seven trophies during his first spell with Celtic, including back-to-back domestic trebles between 2016 and 2019. His departure to Leicester City midway through the 2018/19 season left many Celtic fans fuming and disappointed.
According to Sky Sports, Rodgers’ contract with Celtic will make him the highest-paid manager in the Scottish league, as well as in the club’s history.
Rodgers was also linked to take over the vacant Leeds United job but he has expressed his joy after the appointment, saying it was a simple decision for him to make.
“I am really delighted to return to Celtic and I am hugely excited by this great opportunity. When I was given the privilege of being asked to join the club again, it was a very simple decision for me and my family.
“We have enjoyed some great times at Celtic before and this will be my goal again, to deliver good football, ensure we have a team we all love to watch and ultimately bring more success to our fans.” Rodgers said before going on to acknowledge the “brilliant work” now-former manager Postecoglou has done in the previous two years.
Celtic’s chief executive Michael Nicholson echoed similar sentiments, saying: “We are delighted to welcome Brendan as our new manager. He is a football manager of real quality and experience, with an established track record of delivering success.
“The role of Celtic manager is attractive and highly sought after, and in the process, we considered many potential candidates. In appointing Brendan, we are confident that we have identified the best candidate for Celtic.”
Rodgers was fired by Leicester just eight matches to the end of the 2022/23 season, and said he would have saved the club from relegation if he had not been fired. Leicester City were eventually relegated from the Premier League.
