Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has said the decision for him to return to the club as interim manager was an easy one to make, emphasizing on his love for the club.
Lampard first took charge of Chelsea as the head coach in July 2019, but was given the boot two years later in 2021. He was succeeded by Thomas Tuchel who was also sacked and replaced by Graham Potter last year in September.
Like his predecessors, Potter also received the sack last weekend following Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Aston Villa. Chelsea has since been on the look out for a permanent manager, but as that search continues, the club’s all-time top scorer was appointed as interim boss yesterday.
“It’s a pretty easy decision for me. This is my club. I have a lot of emotions and feelings,” Lampard said.
“I’ve come with a belief I can come and help the cause until the end of the season. I’ll give my utmost to give the fans what they want until the end of the season.
“There’s a lot of talent in the squad. I’m excited to work with that talent and to help them.”
As his caretaking role begins, Lampard has an uphill task ahead of him. He will be tasked with uplifting Chelsea from their current league position which is 11th in the table standings.
A Champions League slot may be too much of a ask for him as they are 14 points adrift of Manchester United placed fourth, but Chelsea will hope to at least make the cut for the Europa League.
They are also still in this season’s Champions League, and they will face Real Madrid in the quarterfinals next week on Wednesday. Realistically, winning the Big Ears is the only way Chelsea can compete in the competition next season.
