Gabriel Jesus returned to the scoresheet for the first time since October 2022 as Arsenal convincingly beat Leeds United 4-1 to reopen the point gap at the top of the table to eight.
It took the Gunners almost half an hour to settle into the match and find their rhythm as Leeds came out in full force threatening the league leaders for the biggest part of the first half.
Arsenal’s breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Gabriel Jesus was fouled in the area and he converted the resulting penalty to give Arsenal the lead. This was Jesus’ first goal since scoring in the 3-1 victory against the Gunners’ North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur in on October 1, 2022.
Arsenal took a 1-nil lead into the halftime break, but came back guns blazing in the second half getting a second goal through Ben White from close range, just two minutes after the restart.
Eight minutes later, Jesus got his second of the match finishing off a well-constructed move by teammates that ended with Leadro Trossard putting it on the plate for the Brazilian to make it 3-0.
A little bit of relaxation allowed Leeds’ Jack Harrison to pass through Arsenal’s midfield and created trouble for Arsenal’s defence! The ball fell on Rasmus Kristensen on the edge of the box and his shot deflected off Oleksandr Zinchenko and beat Aaron Ramsdale to the back of the net.
Leed’s comeback hopes were short-lived as Arsenal took it beyond reach with Granit Xhaka heading home Martin Odegaard’s cross to make it 4-1.
The win restores Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to eight points ahead of Manchester City in second who beat Liverpool earlier with the same scoreline.
