Harry Maguire claims he can handle all the criticism he gets and is determined to reclaim his spot at Manchester United.
On Tuesday night when he came on at Hampden Park, Scottish supporters made fun of the Manchester United defender while paradoxically cheering his passes until he scored an own goal in England’s 3-1 victory. But according to the 30-year old, this only makes his teammates better.
“It pretty much takes the pressure away from my team-mates and puts it all on myself,” Maguire told the Sun in an interview,” It makes them play better, for sure.”
“It is a little bit of banter and it is a hostile environment, coming away to Scotland.
“We knew coming here, when you hear the national anthem and the way they disrespect that, we knew it would be hostile and in the second half I got most of it, and I am happy to go with that, don’t worry about that.”
Maguire, who cost £80 million to transfer from Leicester City to Manchester United in 2019, was relieved of his position as club captain by manager Erik ten Hag in July.
He has struggled for first-team football at the Red Devils and was linked with a move away from Old Trafford in the close season, but Maguire is determined to win his place back in the next few weeks.
“The first four weeks were hard because it was one game a week and the manager didn’t select me, but we have lots of games coming up now and I am sure I will play lots of games,” he said.
