Newcastle were moments away from securing a famous victory at the Parc de Princes until Kylian Mbappe scored a controversial 98th-minute for PSG to deny them.
Newcastle travelled to France knowing that a loss would result into elimination from UCL, and so with that in mind, they played with men behind the ball and looked to hit PSG on the counter.
But that tactic nearly costed them in the early exchanges of the game as Ousmane Dembele fashioned a couple of brilliant chances for his teammates.
Firstly, the Frenchman created space for himself on the right flank to set up Lee Kang-In, but the Asian and Fabian Ruiz squandered that opportunity. Then few minutes later, Dembele set up Mbappe who got denied by Nick Pope.
The Magpies on the break, had their first goalscoring opportunity in the 12th minute when Miguel Almiron found Alexander Isak in the box, but the Swedish international sent his attempt high and wide.
But that miss was forgotten few minutes later as Isak pounced on the loose ball to fire Newcastle ahead after Gianluigi Donnarumma spilled Almiron’s shot from the edge of the box.
Having conceded that goal, PSG pressed hard to level matters, but got denied by Nick Pope and the Newcastle backline.
Firstly, Dembele made an amazing run forward to shot at goal, but Pope’s fingertip save denied him.
Then Bradely Barcola, who was a second half substitute, also got stunningly denied from point-blank range by Pope.
Despite being denied, PSG continued to press and produce waves and waves of attacks towards the Newcastle goal, and luckily got rewarded in the eight minute of the added minute.
This is after referee Szymon Marciniak was asked by VAR to consult with the pitch-side monitor after the ball hit Tino Livramento’s chest and then his arm in the area.
After Marciniak checking, a penalty was awarded. Mbappe stepped up and coolly fired past Pope to secure a hard-fought late equalizer for PSG.
With the Mbappe goal and draw, PSG retain their control of their UEFA Champions League destiny as they now sit second on the log with seven points in their five games. They will now face Dortmund in their last group stages games and will need to win to qualify.
Two points below PSG are Newcastle, who will play AC Milan in their final game, and will hope results go their way to qualify.
