S.S.C Napoli are currently runaway leaders of the Italian Serie A and opened up a 13-point lead gap at the top of the table after beating Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma 2-1 over the weekend.
Although the team have been in top form this season, more praise has been heaped on the man of the moment Victor Osimhen, who has scored 14 goals and registered 3 assists in 16 matches for Napoli this season. At this point, Osimhen has cemented his position as one of the most prolific scorers in Italy this season.
His opener against Roma a few days ago prompted Jose Mourinho to liken Osimhen’s prowess in front of goal to Chelsea great, Didier Drogba. Under Mourinho’s stewardship, Drogba terrorized defenses in the Premier League, winning back-to-back league titles in 2005 and 2006, and since then, the Portuguese manager has always regarded Drogba as one of the best strikers he’s ever coached.
With Osimhen leading the line for Napoli as they run away with the Serie A, and poised to win it for the first time since 1990, Mourihno feels the Nigerian star is currently at the same level as Drogba.
“He is of the same level as Drogba, but Didier didn’t dive,” Mourinho said, according to 90min, before adding that he would definitely buy him if he (Mourinho) was at a big-spending club.
After praising him, Mourinho also sent some shots to the marksman, saying that he dives quite often, something he should remove from his game should he ever move to the Premier League.
It is no secret that the 23-year-old has been a target for Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester United, with the former currently lacking a frequent goal scorer. In his view, Mourinho said that if Osimhen gets a transfer to England and keeps diving, he would not get a lot of decisions his way as he is in Italy.
If he keeps his scoring boots on, Osimhen could become the first African to win the Italian Serie A golden boot in its 125-year history.
