Last evening, Chelsea were beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa in the “battle for 10th” fixture at Stamford Bridge, a result that piled more pressure on manager Graham Potter.
This was Chelsea’s 10th loss of the season and the fourth under Potter at home but it significantly damaged the club’s position on the Premier League table.
Following Ollie Watkins and John McGinn’s goals, Aston Villa leapfrogged Chelsea from 10th and moved up to 9th meaning Chelsea dropped to 11th with a negative goal difference. The Blues have only managed to win twice in the last five Premier League matches.
During the post-match press conference, Potter admitted that Chelsea have to do better and promised that they will recover from this loss after analysing the performance and seeing what they can do better.
“The most important number is the one that goes against us (the scoreline). We have to do better. In terms of the game, you can see the players gave everything, they took on the responsibility, they tried, they had lots of entries into the box and shots and attacks,” Potter told BBC Sport.
Potter admitted that there has been little progress for Chelsea on the table as they have lacked the wins to do so, and the teams that are in front of them have been winning, including yesterday’s opponents Aston Villa who are undefeated in the last five matches.
“After a defeat, there is always a disappointment. There is always a feeling we have not moved forward, that’s fair to say. We have to analyse the performance and look at the things we’ve done well and what we can do better. I don’t like to blame anybody. I have to take responsibility. We are a team, we have to stay together, we are together. We win or lose together,” Potter said.
Chelsea play Liverpool next in midweek before taking on Wolves on Saturday.
