Marcus Rashford on Tuesday signed a new five-year contract at Manchester United committing his future to the club until 2028.
Rashford joined the Red Devils aged just seven and has so far made 359 appearances for the club in all competitions since making his senior team debut in February 2016.
With five more years at Man United, a lot is expected from Rashford, and club legend Wayne Rooney believes he could offer much more than he has already.
While speaking in an interview with The Athletic, Rooney, who is the current manager of Major League Soccer (MLS) club DC United said Rashford can be the main man at Manchester United and must keep playing at a high level for over seven years.
“I think he’s one of the parts of the jigsaw but also someone who could be the main man, the main player for Manchester United and I think he had a fantastic season last year,” Rooney said.
He added, “I think the challenge for Marcus now is to go and do it for the next five, six, seven years and really take his legacy at the club to a new level.”
Rooney, who is the record goal-scorer for Manchester United with 253 goals, is also rooting for Rashford to break this record because he has the potential to do it.
“He [Rashford] is a player who could quite easily go on to break my goalscoring record at Manchester United which he’s got the potential to do if he stays at the club for a long time. So I really hope he goes on and creates a big legacy for himself there.”
Rashford has already scored 123 goals for Manchester United in all competitions and last season alone, the 25-year-old scored 30 goals in 56 matches.
