Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez has revealed his attempt to contact Romelu Lukaku during the Belgian’s transfer saga, but couldn’t get an answer.
While speaking to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it, the Argentine admitted that he was disappointed by the way things ended between Inter Milan and Lukaku.
It should be noted that Lukaku has had two spells with Inter Milan. The first one was more successful as he scored 64 goals in 95 appearances that helped them win the Italian Scudetto in 2021, but the second one (a loan spell) was lackluster.
In spite of that, Inter Milan were willing to make Lukaku’s transfer from Chelsea permanent and had even entered negotiations only for the Belgian to hold talks with Juventus behind their backs, something that rattled the Milan bosses. As such, the Nerazzuri called off talks and put through their interest in the Belgian out of the window.
Now, Lukaku has found himself excess to needs at Chelsea, Juventus are yet to actively pursue him, and there has not been much interest for him from the ever-spending Saudi Arabian clubs.
Club directors, coaching staff and Lukaku’s former teammates reportedly tried to reach the 30-year-old to try and figure out what was happening in vain, and Martinez has confirmed this.
The Chelsea striker was not reachable during the crucial period when Inter tried to get the deal done.
“I tried to call him but he never replied. He did the same with his other teammates. After so many years together, I was disappointed,” Martinez told Gazzetta.
He added: “Wearing this armband means taking on more responsibility within the team, inside the dressing room. But I’ve always done that, even before being captain.”
Lukau was Martinez’s strike partner at Inter Milan in three of the last four seasons.
