Former Manchester City captain IIkay Gundogan has revealed why he ditched the Citizens for Barcelona in the summer despite their immense success in England.
Gundogan left Manchester City after a fruitful seven season at the club, where in his first and only season as the Citizens captain won a sensational treble after carting away the UEFA Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup titles.
Despite that success, Gundogan decided not to renew his contract with the English club and decided to join Barcelona on a free-transfer in the summer.
According to German midfielder, Manchester City acted too late in offering his a new contract.
“City waited a long time to intensify talks. If they had acted a little earlier, the situation would have been different,” Gundogan told DarioAs while explaining why he ditched City for Barcelona.
“But, it was a perfect ending, it couldn’t have come at a better time. It was also my childhood dream to play for Barcelona.”
Gundogan has already made an impressive start to life in Catalonia, and has started all of the club’s four La Liga matches, assisting two goals in that period.
On Saturday ahead of Germany’s game with Japan, the 32-year got his Germany Player of the Year award for his contribution towards Manchester City’s triumph this year.
