Argentina wrapped up their extended World Cup celebrations with a 7-0 drubbing of Curacao in the friendly match played in the wee hours of Wednesday at the Santiago del Estero.
Team captain Lionel Messi put up another spectacular display as he joined the 100 club in style, scoring a hat-trick in the first half. The 35-year-old opened the scoring in the 20th minute before adding two more before the break.
He was also involved in the fourth goal setting up Enzo Fernandez who scored with a long range effort. Nicolas Gonzalez was also on the score-sheet as Argentina went into the break with a 5-0 lead.
Juventus wing attacker Angel Di Maria came in to score from the penalty spot in the 78th minute before Gonzalo Montiel wrapping it up when he struck the 7th with three minutes left to play.
Speaking to the media after the game, Lionel Scaloni confessed that the celebrations were never going to stop as the fans wanted it done across all the home stadiums. He said.
“We like to compete and that’s the most important thing for what’s to come. We will never finish celebrating and I think it’s only fair that the whole country can enjoy it.
“The Argentine fans have always been one of the best and now they are the best. Whenever we played with this shirt, we always get identified. Whenever we went,they always support us, We will continue to think objectively about what we might be lacking. We have a wide range of players. Thirty three came, so we have the pattern to pick from. If others come along, they will come too.”
