Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag has revealed the severity of Lisandro Martinez’s injury he suffered during the Red’s Europa League quarter-final draw with Sevilla on Thursday.
The Argentinian went down unchallenged in the later exchanges of the game and was in discomfort when he was carried off the pitch by his two fellow Argentina World Cup winning players Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel. He was then transferred to a stretcher and carried directly to the dressing room.
After the game that United had to play with 10 men in the dying minutes, Ten Hag was asked about the condition of the Argentinian center-back. He said his injury doesn’t look so nice.
“We have seen Licha (Martinez) drop out after a moment,” he said to MUTV. “There was no opponent involved so it doesn’t look that great but we have to wait. The medical staff have to do their job, to give the right diagnosis.
On if it’s an achilles injury, Ten Hag said “I cannot tell what it is, but is not an Achilles. I have spoken with him and he is okay and he is calm.
“I think [it is] an injury [that means] he will not play on Sunday. I cannot say what the diagnosis [is]. I prefer to wait and to know what it is.”
Two late own goals from Harry Maguire and Tyrell Malacia were enough for Sevilla to come from two goals down to secure a 2-all draw in the Europa League quarter-final first leg at Old Trafford.
United had gone ahead in the first half courtesy of Marcel Sabitzer’s double.
This tie is evenly poised ahead of the second leg that will take place in Seville, Spain next week.
The Reds might also not be with Marcus Rashford and Rafael Varane for that crucial game while Bruno Fernandes is also not available due to a suspension.
