Mikel Arteta was left infuriated following Anthony Gordon’s goal that subjected Arsenal to a first league defeat on Saturday.
Arsenal faced Newcastle on Saturday at the St. James’ Park in their eleventh league game, and seemed to have things under control, but a controversial goal changed the proceedings of the game, ultimately handing the Gunners their first loss of the campaign.
From the left hand cross, Gordon scored the lone goal of the game, but in the build up to it, not only did the ball appeared to have gone out of play, Joelinton looked to have fouled Gabriel Magalhães.
Both incidences plus a possible offside were checked by VAR, but in the end, the onfield decision which was the goal stood.
Speaking after the game, Arteta said; “I praise my players for the performance and the way we played. We didn’t deserve to lose the match. We lose the match because of the clear and obvious decisions. It’s embarrassing. A disgrace. That’s what it is. A disgrace.
Arteta made his feelings known. He added: “There’s so much at stake, we put so many hours. I am here to represent the football club and get my team competing at the highest level possible. The margins are so small. It’s a disgrace, it’s embarrassing. That’s how I feel and how everyone feels in that [dressing] room. You cannot imagine the amount of messages I got saying this cannot continue. It’s embarrassing.
“I have to be here now to say it is not acceptable. I don’t’ know how to feel. I am wasting my time. We are wasting our time. I don’t want to be in the hands of people. It’s difficult enough to compete against this team. It cannot continue. It’s embarrassing. There’s too much at stake. The consequences are too big.”
Arsenal had lost two games this season, but this was their first loss in the league. It is a defeat that drops them down to the third place after Man City’s comfortable 6-1 win over Bournemouth.
