Liverpool has witnessed the farewell of two long-term serving players this summer as Jordan Henderson and James Milner, who had been the Red’s captain and vice captain for almost the last decade decided to leave the club and look for greener pastures elsewhere.
The departures of both Henderson and Milner has seen Liverpool boss Jurgen Kloop name Virgil Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold as the new club’s permanent captain and vice captain representative ahead of the new season.
Klopp broke this news to the two defenders during one of the club’s training sessions, and for Trent-who will be replacing Milner, it was a ‘special moment to remember’.
“At first I thought he was going to tell me to stop giving the ball away. It was a lovely surprise and not one I was really expecting in that moment. It was special and a moment I will remember.
“I feel ready. I feel like, even before being put in this position, I have been a leader, leading in the things I do on a daily basis in training in and around the lads. I think the lads see me as someone in a leadership role.
“It’s an amazing position to be in, but there is more responsibility on me now to make sure we succeed and achieve the things we want to this season.”
Trent has been at Liverpool since October 2016 when he made his debut against Tottenham Hotspurs in a 2-1 EFL Cup victory. Since then he has featured in 273 games and scored 16 goals.
In that period, he has won the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, FA Cup, UEFA Super Club and the FIFA Club World Cup.
