Following FA Cup final triumph over Manchester United at Wembley, City’s skipper IIkay Gundogan has said “it’s an absolute joy to be part of this team”
Gundogan scored both goals as City overcame United 2-1 at Wembley Stadium to win their seventh FA Cup and add to their Premier League title this season.
The German has been an integral part of the City squad ( that has won multiple titles) since he signed for the club seven years ago from Borussia Dortmund.
“I am very proud.” Gundogan told Man City media after the triumph against United
“It’s my seventh year now. I’ve never stayed that long at a football club. So that alone, just looking at the numbers, shows how much I appreciate the club, how much also I feel appreciated from the fans, my teammates, it’s an absolute joy to be part of this team, to work with Pep and his staff.
“I have learned a lot throughout the years. I had many ups and a few downs, we have won a lot together and every single trophy feels special. So far it has been amazing.”
The midfielder’s contract at the Etihad Stadium is set to expire in the summer, and it’s rumoured that he won’t extend it any further even if Guardiola wants him to stay.
“He knows what I think,” said Guardiola when asked about Gundogan’s situation.
“Maybe some of you know it, we are neighbours, we live on the same floor so for many years he is a close friend of mine.
“He plays exceptional. Hopefully we can finish in a good way. [Director of football] Txiki [Begiristain] is working [on the contract]. The season he has done is exceptional.”
