Jurgen Klopp has been handed a two-game ban by the English Football Association for his comments on Referee Paul Tierney after Liverpool’s win over Tottenham last month.
This was confirmed in a verdict released by the FA on Thursday, nearly three weeks after the incident.
Along with the two-game ban, Klopp has been given a £75,000 fine. The first match of his ban is ‘effective immediately’ meaning he will be in the stands for Liverpool’s Saturday game against Aston Villa, while the second is suspended until the end of the 2023/24 season provided he doesn’t commit further breaches.
Klopp accused Tierney of saying something “not ok” after being shown a yellow card for Celebrating Diogo Jota’s winning goal against Spurs in the face of fourth official John Brooks.
The German went ahead in his post-match conference to say that the English referee had bias towards him and his side.
“We have our history with Mr Tierney. I really don’t know what this man has with us and what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not OK.” an emotional Klopp said after the Spurs win.
All these comments were quickly refuted by PGMOL, the refereeing body and the FA launched an investigation into the allegations.
The ban now means Pepijn Lijnders, Klopp’s assistant will take over the dugout duties on Saturday, and will be supported by Peter Krawietz.
