Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been charged by the Football Association for his comments against Referee Paul Tierney after the Kops 4-3 win over Tottenham on Sunday
In the post-match press conference, the German said the English referee had bias towards him and his side.
“We have our history with Mr Tierney. I I really don’t know what this man has with us and what he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not OK.” an emotional Klopp said after the Spurs win
FA say that Klopp’s comments towards Tierney constitute improper conduct, and the German has been given till Friday, 5th May to respond to the charge.
“It is alleged that the manager’s comments regarding the match official during post-match media interviews constitutes improper conduct in that they imply bias, and/or question the integrity of the referee, and/or are personal/offensive, and/or bring the game into disrepute.” the FA said
But speaking on Tuesday ahead of Liverpool’s game with Fulham on Wednesday, Klopp said he regrets what he did as he did it out of emotion and anger.
“The whole situation should not have happened at all,” said Klopp.
“It was out of emotion and anger in that moment. That’s why I celebrated the way I did.
“We won a game 4-3 in a spectacular manner and the only headlines I created and I really regret that. It’s not necessary and not how it should be.
“I tried to calm down but it didn’t work out properly, go into all the interviews and then I said what I said.
“I know he [Tierney] is not doing it intentionally but we have a history, you cannot deny that. I’m not a resentful person, not at all, but these kind things that have happened in the past in decisive games. They didn’t happen intentionally but they are still there.
“The referees are really angry about what I said. I shouldn’t have said a couple of things but lying was not involved.”
This is the second time Klopp is charged by the FA after he was given a one-match ban in October after he was sent off against Manchester City for questioning the referee’s decision. At that time, he was also fined £30,000 and warned about his future conduct.
