Kylian Mbappe has written to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to tell them he will not extend his contract by one year to 2025.
Mbappe signed a three-year contract extension with PSG worth hundreds of millions in salary and bonuses last year. It was later revealed that the contract was two years with the option to extend for another year. But as it appears now, this option to extend is now off the table.
Mbappe’s decision puts PSG in a tight situation. They now have to sell him this summer or let him go next summer on a free transfer. PSG have heavily invested in Mbappe since signing him from Monaco in 2018 for £161 million and would like to recoup some if not all of that money.
PSG value Mbappe upwards of what they paid for him from Monaco and a handful of clubs that could afford to pay include Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester City, and maybe Manchester United if they get the Qatari money.
It is no secret that Mbappe’s preferred destination is Real Madrid as he grew up a Madrid fan. Real Madrid even tried signing him last summer and were ready to cough up as much as €200 million to secure his signature.
Mbappe’s rumblings with PSG started last month when he took to his social media to blast the club for using his image in promotional content, making the world know that his image rights might not have been part of the deal he signed with the club.
Mbappe has scored 212 goals for PSG and is currently their all-time top scorer.
