The Spanish La Liga returns this weekend after a short break last weekend that saw Real Madrid win the Copa Del Rey.
Before this pause, leaders Barcelona had moved to 72 points from 33 matches and Atletico Madrid had leapfrogged city rivals Real Madrid from second after the latter lost their match.
Tonight, Real Mallorca will host Cadiz in the first match of Matchday 34. Six points separate these two teams who both lost their matches last week, but Cadiz are in a worse position, as they are just one point away from the relegation zone. This match is important to both teams nevertheless.
On Saturday, fourth-placed Real Sociedad will host Girona in what promises to be an interesting match. Both teams have been in good form lately with Sociedad losing only one in the last five matches and Girona winning four in the same number of matches. Whoever wins will not change positions but a loss for Girona could have them drop if Athletic Club win their match against Villareal.
Real Madrid fans will hope their team still has some energy left after a thrilling encounter against Manchester City in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League semi-final in midweek as they seek to return to winning ways against Getafe.
At the same time, they will need to save some energy for the second leg next week in Manchester. Getafe are fighting relegation so they could play with their hearts out in this but Los Blancos would not like to go winless in two successive La Liga matches.
On Sunday, second-placed Atletico Madrid could relegate Elche if they beat them by any score. Atletico have been in great form in the past couple of months and would like to keep it up and finish the league on a high so Elche are headed for tough times and could now lose their La Liga status with four matches to go.
Barcelona will close off the weekend playing in the Catalunya derby against Espanyol, a match that could make them champions if they win it.
The Catalans have won two matches on the bounce after losing to Vallecano towards the end of last month and Espanyol have only won one in five matches and find themselves fighting relegation in the 19th position on the table.
