Matchday 29 of the Spanish La Liga is upon us, ladies and gentlemen! With Barcelona 13 points ahead of rivals Real Madrid with only 10 matches remaining, it may look like it’s done and dusted, but there is still a lot to fight for as in football, it is never over until it’s really over.
The matchday opens tonight with Rayo Vallecano hosting Osasuna at Estadio de Vallecas in a mid-table affair. Vallecano in ninth are on a poor run of form; they have failed to record a win in their last five matches (D3 L2) and will want to turn things around against Osasuna who are only better than them by one win in the same number of matches. Only one point separates the two teams on the La Liga table.
Tomorrow night, Real Madrid will play away to Cadiz and will also want to improve their La Liga form which reads only two wins in their last five matches (W2 D1 L2), with their last game ending in defeat against Villarreal.
The Cadiz test might not present big difficulties for Real Madrid since they last lost to them in October 2020, but Los Blancos might play cautiously with the Champions League return leg to Chelsea on Wednesday next week on their mind.
Barcelona were held to a goalless draw by Girona last time out, the first time they failed to score in their last five league matches. They will want to change that when they visit fifteenth-placed Getafe on Sunday afternoon.
The hosts are just three points from safety but face a huge task as they haven’t beaten Barcelona since October 2020.
On Sunday, the most in-form club in La Liga right now Atletico Madrid will host relegation-threatened Almeria at the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid.
Atletico are expected to brush off the midweek 2-0 defeat in a charity match against Besiktas by continuing their fine form in the league with a sixth consecutive victory.
A win for Atletico will see them leapfrog rivals Real Madrid in second position if Los Blancos lose against Cadiz.
