Matchday 25 of the Spanish La Liga returns this weekend, kicking off tonight and all through to Monday. Tonight, Cadiz, who are in 15th on the table, but one point away from safety will play Getafe who are in 16th.
Both these teams are fighting for survival so this match could be interesting as the winner will move farther away from the relegation zone before others play over the weekend. Both have won twice in the last five matches so we are looking at an almost evenly matched fixture.
Tomorrow, second-placed Real Madrid will host Espanyol looking to return to winning ways after drawing their last two matches. Los Blancos have collected only eight points from the available 15 in their last five matches, and are currently nine points behind league leaders Barcelona. A win over Espanyol will cut the gap between them and the leaders to six for at least a day as Xavi’s boys play on Sunday.
Espanyol are currently 13th on the table and lost their last match against Valladolid, This could be a tricky fixture, as Real Madrid will be mindful of the midweek Champions League second-leg match against Liverpool.
Real Sociedad, who are still keeping tabs with Atletico Madrid in third on the table will fancy taking that position with a win over Real Mallorca, but they are on a poor run of form. They have not won the last three matches, winning only once in their last five. Their opponents, Mallorca are slightly better form wise, as they have won twice in as many matches.
On Sunday, Barcelona will make the trip to Bilbao to play Athletic Club. The Catalan giants returned to winning ways over the weekend against relegation-threatened Valencia, so they will look to keep that momentum going knowing they have to maintain the nine-point gap between them and rivals Madrid.
Sevilla, whose recent success came from their Europa League wins a couple of years ago are involved in a relegation battle and could drop into the relegation zone if they don’t get a positive result from their match against another relegation-threatened side Almeria on Sunday. Both clubs are on a poor run of form, having both managed only one win in their last five matches.
On Monday, Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid, who thrashed Sevilla 6-1 last weekend will visit Girona late at night to round off matchday 25. Atletico have not lost a single match in the last five and want to keep that run going to put a respectable gap between themselves and fourth-placed Real Sociedad. Real Madrid are still eight points ahead of them.
